This post is not to insist the traffic rules to be followed, but if you are driving in Vellore then you must follow these rules strictly. I am a chennaite but I have scaled every street in the Vellore city with my cycle, scooty and car. Earlier in my school days I used to commute in a 2 wheeler and have used it such that if it had a mouth it would have reproached me terribly. I consider myself to be an expert in driving especially in Vellore. Now here are the rules.
If you are driving in a particular lane ,
look for vehicles coming into your lane in the opposite direction.
You are supposed to give way for this vehicle first otherwise it would ram on your vehicle.
Your vehicle horn is just a toy, play with it liberally;
it doesn’t account for a crime or bad behavior coz nobody is going to care for it.
Try to bring out the AR Rahman in you.
(I always used to play the tune of my current favorite song)
Never drive in either side of buses, the inhabitants of the bus would spit or throw
anything at you at anytime.
(I have experienced this several times)
Watch out for people, vehicles, and cattle to suddenly appear from nowhere,
you see, this is not your dad’s road...!
Never drive behind a government bus coz god only knows
when it would puke black smoke.
Believe me one of my dresses is now in grey color
which was in pure white when I bought it.
Never drive behind a private bus coz
god only knows when the bundle from its top hauler will fall on you.
Only if you see a traffic constable you should stop at a signal otherwise
carry on, don’t bother about the signals
they are just colors changing once in a while to entertain you.
When you are driving if you notice the person driving ahead of you turning either to his right/left
it means that the person is going to change the lane.
This is a very important rule coz,
I have seen every person following this strictly in vellore.
Now don’t ask me whether I follow this or not.
If the person driving ahead of you is using a ‘Right indicator’
then it means he is going to turn to his left and vice versa.
If you notice the indicator lights blinking all the way,
then you are wrong they are fancy lights and not indicator lights.
Never drive behind/either side/in front of an auto,
it is highly dangerous and lethal too.
For more info on this rule,
I invite the readers to come to vellore and have a thrilling experience watching it.
Sure your adrenalin levels will pump up.
The pet name we have given for autos is Lord Yama’s vehicle.
Never drive behind a 40+ aunty;
you will reach your destination only after 2 days irrespective of the distance
as the speed you drive would be 10 kmph.
Be careful when you drive in and around the theaters.
Men would all the way watch the cinema poster and slam into your vehicle.
Experienced this when the movie ‘Aiyya’ was released,
a guy on watching the poster rammed into my vehicle.
Now it is left to the reader’s imagination how I scolded him.
Only in vellore you can find people getting down from car in the middle of the busiest road.
Watch out for this when you drive.
There is nothing like following a particular lane,
wherever there is space you can utilize it.
If you see your friends or relatives while driving please stop there,
have a nice chat with them; don’t worry about the honking sound from behind.
When you drive in vellore you never get to know the maximum speed limit of your vehicle
so better do some simulation kind of thing and know it.
Never go near a lorry/truck, its honking sound would bring a heart attack to you.
Today if you drive in a two way road don’t be surprised
if it is a one way the very next day.
If the elections are around the corner then I bet you will not travel in the usual route
coz any road would be blocked to put up a stage.
So better have some alternate routes.
One big advantage if you drive in vellore is that,
you can drive in any place under the sun, under any circumstance.
Don’t know about the rules in other cities as I don’t have any experience driving over
there but I am sure I would drive well, as I am a vellorian..!!
